Since 1899 Birmingham Settlement has helped individuals, families and our local communities in Birmingham to break free from poverty and realise their potential. We tackle social disadvantage by working with individuals, agencies and communities to identify gaps and assets to develop and improve existing and new services where they are needed most.

Our aim is to ensure that everyone in our community has their basic needs met with access to support when they need it most so that they are able to live happy, fulfilled lives and reach their potential despite the challenges they face along the way. The services we provide cover:

Community Engagement & Wellbeing Engagement activities e.g. support for older people, families, young people, service users and communities.
Community Development Community development and capacity building/infrastructure support.
Money Advice

 

Debt and welfare benefits advice and associated support.

We are looking for Volunteer Activity Assistants/Tutors to join Birmingham Settlement, helping run a number of sessions as outlined in the Volunteer Role Description below. If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete an application form and send it to:

 Role Title:   Volunteer Activity Assistant/Tutor

Where: Birmingham Settlement – Aston, 359-361 Witton Road, Aston, Birmingham, B6 6NS

 When:  Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays

Commitment: Flexible

Duration:  Ongoing

Purpose of the role:

We are looking for people who have a passion to help others. We run a number of regular weekly sessions including:

  • IT Club – Wednesdays – Supporting individuals to learn new computer skills.
  • Coffee & Conversation Group – Providing a supportive environment for women to chat, learn and get basic support.

We are looking for volunteers to support us to run these sessions by:

  • Setting up rooms and preparing refreshments.
  • Signing in attendees and registering new people.
  • Talk to attendees to find out what their needs are.
  • Providing support to:
    • Teach computer skills such as email, word processing or Skype.
    • Learn new skills and find training.
    • Practice English skills.
    • Read and understand letters.
    • Run activities, such as games, discussions or children’s activities.
    • Support individuals to attend trips or take part in events.

Our Coffee & Conversation Group is due to expand soon to include more events/trips, family activities and training sessions, so we would welcome volunteers with the skills to contribute to this development.

Volunteers can help with one or more sessions depending on what they are interested in.

 Requirements:

  • Aged over 18.
  • Friendly approachable manner and must be able to communicate with people of all ages, needs and backgrounds with an impartial attitude.
  • Experienced using Microsoft Word, the Internet and email (IT Club).
  • Previous experience of delivering training or mentoring would be beneficial.
  • A calm and patient approach is required.
  • Can work with others as part of a team.
  • Are reliable, flexible, honest and mature.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Additional language skills would be beneficial but not essential.
